MOB SCENE HALTS VINTAGE-CAR RACE IN HAVANA
HAVANA – Over the weekend, drivers manning classic cars of the 1940’s and ‘50s planned to compete in a series of races against the clock at Marina Hemingway tourist centre on Havana’s west side. Unfortunately, unruly crowds that swarmed onto the track prevented all but one of the races from taking place.
Approximately 30 cars were entered in the aborted competition, which was brought to a halt when hundreds of spectators stormed the track at about the halfway point of the race.
Fox News Latino reported that in the race that did take place, a 400-meter competition for pre 1981 cars with 4 and 6 cylinder engines – the winners were a Fiat 125 and 1954 Ford, respectively.
The first auto race in Cuba took place in 1903, the year the Havana Automobile club was founded. In that initial race, five cars raced through the streets of Havana’s Guanajay and La Lisa districts.
